My name is Julie Jakobi. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with the State of Florida and I have a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling.
My journey towards becoming a mental health counselor began in 2002/2003 when I adopted four foster children. I obtained “on the job” training about dealing with Reactive Attachment Disorder, ADD/ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I also learned how to deal effectively with a variety of misbehaviors. I am a certified Adoption Specialist through the Florida Department of Children and Families.
I also work a great deal with adults and children who need help in their daily lives with Anger Management, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Major Recurring Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma. I see many clients who have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and for this I teach Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
My approach is to help the client identify what is working in their life and what not may be working so well. Then we collaborate to figure out new approaches in order to solve problems and alleviate symptoms. I also work with my clients to educate themselves about what is going on in their mind and body so they can cope better with their symptoms and achieve greater relief and change. Besides DBT, I utilize Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy techniques, Solution-Focused Therapy, and EMDR.
I also provide support for families who have a member who has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.
