TF-CBT is a structured therapy designed to help children and adolescents recover from the emotional impact of trauma by using coping skills, gradual exposure, and caregiver support.
TF-CBT was developed by Drs. Judith Cohen, Esther Deblinger, and Anthony Mannarino, and is backed by decades of research as a gold standard treatment for childhood trauma.
It helps children understand and process their trauma, build coping skills, and restore a sense of safety and confidence, while also supporting the caregiver-child relationship.
TF-CBT sessions include:
Expect a warm, structured, and supportive process. The therapist works at the child’s pace, integrates the caregiver into treatment, and always prioritizes emotional safety.
Most children complete TF-CBT in 12–25 weekly sessions, though more time may be needed for complex trauma or comorbid challenges.
TF-CBT is designed for children ages 3–18 who have experienced trauma. It’s most effective when a non-offending caregiver is available to participate actively in the process.
