Reduce the Power of Intrusive Thoughts: Learn that obsessions do not have to dictate your actions, and that tolerating uncertainty is possible without performing compulsions.
Reclaim Your Time and Energy: OCD can consume hours each day; ERP progressively frees you from rituals and avoidance, restoring space for meaningful activities and relationships.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

What is OCD?

OCD is a mental health disorder involving recurring, unwanted obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts) that significantly interfere with daily life. It is not about being ‘neat’ — OCD subtypes include contamination, harm, religion, relationships, and many others.
OCD treatment at Therapy Treatment Team is delivered by licensed therapists with specialized training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), including LMHCs, LCSWs, and Psychologists. All OCD specialists have completed advanced training in ERP protocol.
The primary evidence-based treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Other modalities that may be integrated include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT), and mindfulness-based approaches. Psychiatric consultation for medication may be recommended for moderate to severe presentations.
ERP treatment significantly reduces the time and distress consumed by obsessions and compulsions, helping you engage more fully in work, relationships, and the activities that matter most to you. Most clients experience meaningful symptom reduction within 12–20 sessions.
Sessions include psychoeducation about OCD, development of an exposure hierarchy, guided ERP exercises where you face feared triggers while resisting compulsions, and review of between-session practice assignments.
ERP requires courage — you will gradually face situations that trigger anxiety without performing compulsions. Your therapist guides every step carefully, ensuring exercises are challenging but manageable. Anxiety typically decreases significantly as treatment progresses.
Most clients experience significant improvement within 12 to 20 sessions. More complex or long-standing OCD may require additional treatment. Weekly sessions with daily practice between appointments produce the best outcomes.
ERP is appropriate for most people with OCD. Your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment and may recommend modifications or adjunctive support depending on co-occurring conditions such as trauma or depression.
