Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

What is CBT-I?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a structured psychological treatment that addresses the thoughts, behaviors, and habits that cause and maintain chronic insomnia. It is recommended as the first-line treatment by the American College of Physicians and major sleep medicine organizations worldwide.
CBT-I is delivered by licensed therapists who have completed specialized training in behavioral sleep medicine, including LMHCs, Psychologists, and LCSWs with CBT-I certification or advanced training in sleep-focused CBT protocols.
CBT-I is effective for chronic insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep for 3+ months), sleep maintenance insomnia, sleep onset insomnia, early morning awakening, and insomnia related to anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or medical conditions.
By addressing the cognitive and behavioral drivers of insomnia, CBT-I produces durable improvements in sleep quality, duration, and daytime functioning — without the side effects or dependency risks associated with sleep medication.
Sessions include sleep education, review of sleep diary data, application of sleep restriction therapy and stimulus control, cognitive restructuring of unhelpful sleep beliefs, relaxation and mindfulness techniques, and relapse prevention planning.
Expect an active, structured program with between-session homework, including keeping a sleep diary and implementing prescribed sleep schedule changes. Some temporary sleep disruption is normal early in treatment — improvement typically follows within 2 to 3 weeks.
CBT-I is a short-term, structured program: most clients complete treatment in 6 to 8 sessions over 6 to 8 weeks. Many achieve lasting sleep improvement by the end of the program, with long-term maintenance gains continuing after treatment ends.
CBT-I is appropriate for most adults with chronic insomnia. It can be adapted for older adults, individuals with medical conditions, and those with co-occurring anxiety or depression. Your therapist will screen for any contraindications during the initial assessment.
