Is it Healthy- or is it Disordered. When eating disorder behaviors disguise themselves as “wellness”

You don’t have to scroll long on social media before running into a “what I eat in a day” video, a healthier version of a “bad” food, or an influencer discussing the latest elimination diet. On the surface, these messages appear to promote health, longevity, and community. But where do we draw the line between genuine wellness and something more rigid, manipulative, and ultimately harmful? If you are struggling to navigate these messages, understanding Eating Disorder Therapy Treatments is a vital step. This topic is a great next step after understanding Eating Disorders: A Psychiatric Perspective.

The Framework of Disordered Eating: Care vs. Control

Disordered eating is often less about what someone is doing and more about the why behind it. If behaviors are not driven by care for our bodies and minds but rather by fear, guilt, or control, this is what makes a habit disordered.

For example, exercise is wonderful for mental and physical health. However, when it becomes something we feel compelled to do out of obligation, punishment, or fear—even despite injury or illness—the behavior hasn’t changed, but the mindset has. Similarly, compensating for a “delicious dessert” by skipping breakfast the next day moves the behavior from neutral nourishment to a control-driven action rooted in fear.

To better understand this, review the differences between a care-driven mindset and a control-driven mindset:

Care Driven

Control Driven

Healing your mindset is just as important as healing your body. Learn more about eating disorders and how therapy can help you.

When Does Disordered Eating Become an Eating Disorder?

It’s important to note that while control-driven behaviors are disordered, they do not always signify a clinical eating disorder. An eating disorder is diagnosed when these patterns become persistent, impair daily functioning, and dominate someone’s physical and emotional life. If you suspect these patterns are taking over, seeking a Psychiatric Evaluation in-person or via telehealth can provide the clarity you need.

Navigating Social Media with Discernment

We don’t have to label all wellness messages as inherently “bad.” Instead, we can approach them with gentleness and discernment. As specialists we encourage you to ask:

  • Is this information rooted in care or in control?
  • Am I using this to support my body or to reinforce a rigid rule?

The answers are not always obvious, but with greater awareness, you can engage with wellness culture in a way that supports your well-being rather than quietly hurting it. This focus on mindfulness is closely tied to The Link Between Anxiety, Subconsciousness, and Sleep.
